I think that the 116600 has a lot going for it to be considered the "best modern Rolex dive watch". However, I personally think that it's been surpassed by the 41mm Sub now that Rolex has toned down those square super case lugs. The new Sub has a leg up on the 116600 in some ways: improved lume, updated movement, and thinner case.
IMHO, the SD43 is the best diver Rolex currently makes. The only way I would advise against it is if you have a wrist that is smaller than 7”. I think the subs are great. The SD43 takes everything that is awesome about the sub and just amplifies it.
The original model never had the cyclops, and neither did the Sea-Dweller 116600 “SD4K” which enjoyed a limited run for three years leading up to the 2017 release of the SD43, now coveted by collectors worldwide. Who would have thought that just a few years later, Rolex would replace the SD4K. ! Well, it happened, at Baselworld 2017, the 116600 was out and the 126600, aka SD43 or SD50 was in! The timing is significant in that the first SDs were released in 1967 (for professional use only), making 2017 the 50th anniversary of the Sea Dweller. If the choice were a Submariner or an SD4K, it’d be the SD in a heartbeat. Adds a little more to the classic utilitarian appeal. I'll be on the look out for your post come Christmas!
I have an SD43 and love it. It is a total unit of a watch - a wristclock, if you like. I was in the same boat as you. thinking about a Sub, but opted for an SD after I tried it.
